Thirukkural needs no introduction to the citizens of Tamilnadu, India. It is very much a part and parcel of their daily lives. Scholars, businessmen, philosophers, students – everyone draws inspiration from the beautifully written couplets.
The author of this highly esteemed Tamil Classic is Thiruvalluvar. There is no archaeological evidence to pinpoint the author's exact time period. Based on references of Thirukkural in other Tamil works, the time period is generally estimated to be as far back as 200 BC. Thiruvalluvar's work shows that he was a man who vividly understood the concepts of good governance, family life, complex human relationships, wealth and love.
Thirukkural is a collection of 1330 rhyming Tamil couplets organised into 3 sections and 133 chapters. Each chapter contains 10 couplets. Each couplet consists of seven cirs, with four in the first line and three in the second. A cir is a single or a combination of more than one Tamil word.
